Absolute Rubbish

I have been reading all the articles that have sprung up after the loss of Set Alight. Everyone has their right opinion but what I cant understand is why is everyone blaming the Jockey.

When she lost the derby in a Gallant Effort, I can understand that Malesh did Panic but in my Opinion he did his best under the circumstances but was he really the one to blame or are tactics on how she will be run in big races are the cause.
Pesi and the connections had Telstar as a Pacemaker in the race but why did he let a weak rider like M Kharadi ride the horse, secondly he was running in a span of 8 days which makes you wonder what the real tactics were.... the Job of a pacemaker is to try and settle the fancied stablemate and lead it into the straight. Telstar could not even pace with SA till the 800 mt marker and started to fall back at the 6 flg marker exposing SA to the field due to which Malesh found him by himself all alone in front with 4 flgs to go and had no choice but to ride the filly out. to those who want to see what i mean watch the derby with a open mind including Sharan Kumar. I know Malesh is no Saint but give credit where it is due.

Re her loss against Ice Breaker last week I am surprised that everyone is blaming the jockey and Some say she is not the same horse which is utter rubbish.
What has surprised me including people who rate them selves as "India most prolific writers on Horse Racing" have missed the Golden Rule of Horse racing " Horses are not Machines".

I am surprised that why has none of these Racing Guru's considered that this Wonder Filly is not a machine.

In a span of 14 days She Ran a Mock race on the 2nd August in 1.38 (1600) and (600 in 35) was did some pace work on the 9th in Pune, Arrived in Hydrebad between 10th-13th Aug, two easy pace work in Hyd and then ran a 10 flg race in Hydrebad for the first time in her life with Top Weight.

She is a filly that is asked to do too much by her connections, where do you think she had the time to recoup from the mock race and travelling before she was pitted against her peers on the 16th, any person with half a racing brain knows filly's need rest in between runs and traveling so why dint her connections consider these factors when they targeted her for this race if you watch the final stages of the race it was clear the horse had nothing left in her but Fatigue.

Its about time people, critics and the rest see the broader picture and give credit where its due consider the fact that the Trainer and her connections who decide her future as SA does not decide when she runs and where but Pesi and the owners do and its about time they take responsibility for their actions, I have always had a lot of respect P Shroff and his judgement as the jockey but am not too sure of his abilities as a trainer ????........ Maybe he has too much on his plate.

With the test of time Set Alight will always be talked about as a wonder horse, 20 years from now not many people will remember who beat her but will acknowledge that she was the Best in her Era. Elusive Pimpernel was one of the greatest to run the turf in India and many people still remember his Talent but how many of them remember who beat him in his only loss No many.

I hope she bounces back and proves her class and if she does I hope credit is give where its due....... If she does not it will be sad day in racing where Greed and Ego will see
" An End of a Era".

Here are two Famous Quotes on Horses dont just read them Understand Them.

1) If the horse does not enjoy his work, his rider will have no joy.
- H.H. Isenbart

2) A horse doesn't care how much you know until he knows how much you care.

- Pat Parelli

This is my Opinion and I am happy for comments as long as they are made in the right spirit.

I agree with ur opnion on filly SET ALIGHT & is the one like ABOLINE and it will definitly come back to win the President of India gold cup in a distance. Make a note of it that the odds would be above evens.

Hello,
I feel that for an expert racing writer like you it is not worthwhile writing in detail about the winning or rather loosing of Set Alight. Afterall it is racing and nothing is certain in racing and everyhorse will start loosing one day after a string of successes. But I do feel that Set Alight has seen the end of her racing career and the owners and trainer must have other options for her rather than running her in future which will only bring down her reputation.

any of the above trainers had set alight in there yard she would still remain unbeaten.the proplem with pesi is too many big owners, too many expensive harses and too many onwers to oblige to.
even a trainer like r.v. gowli would priduce better results if he has the quality and quantity of good horses which pesi has got.horses make a trainer great not vise versa

Hello Tiger,

I appreciate your genuine concern when you write about the issue you feel strongly, unlike some others who just want to put their senseless babble on their blog (long live freedom of expression!), which is as incoherent as it is stupid.

Having once taken a position that Set Alight was the greatest filly they have encountered, their loss of face is quite understandable. In their effort to clean up the muck off their faces, they then go wild with insinuating about jockey#1/jockey#2/trainer/racing manager/machinations & manipulations in racing etc, when all they can do is to own up the simple fact that they could have been just wrong as anyone who deals with horses can be, more often than not.

I am surprised about a blogger's "knowledge" about which races constitute the triple crown in the first place. He says "he lost interest" in Set Alight's career after she lost the "second leg of the triple crown"! Did she run the first leg of the Triple Crown? This is "news" to all Indian racegoers including her connections!

So what can you really expect from other faceless, anonymous posters who may be genuinely hurt (emotionally and financially) by the recent lacklustre performance of a once-very-promising filly?

The possibility that Set Alight may have had some health issue on the Derby day, which brought about her loss then, seems more plausible in the aftermath of the Derby. She was absent from the track for 3 months, and when she faced the starter again, she got decisively beat by a horse whom she had decisively beaten twice earlier.

Dear T ,

Most racing patrons do concede that Pesi over worked the filly and that lead to the downfall in the indian derby. The filly was tracked for 20 out of the 30 days prior to the derby.Comparitively Antonios must have been tracked 3 or 4 times only.Pesi has this bad habit of overworking and that was seen in the earlier instance of Dynasty and Kiara.

The only Success he has had is with Diego Riveria , where he does not have much of a say , the owner being better informed.

Coming back to Hyd , i do agree that the Travel and recurring Track work must have taken a toll. But that is part of racing and the Owner / Trainer are aware of these matters. The defeat to Ice Breaker is inexplicable and if not the Trainer , the jockey is to blame for having ridden in a atrocious manner. This being his first ride on the Horse , his inexperience showed , but being CALLED a Top Jockey , one does expect these Guys to have better judgement.

C Alford has never delivered except for Deepak Khiatan and it was very odd to see Pesi Shroff and Company , retain his services. Most of his rides are questionable and the first 100 metres of any race gives us a fair idea of where Alford will finish.

Dear Tiger
It is indeed nice of you to voice your opinion about Set Alight,
and the knowledgeable friends view too.
what surprised me is the remarkable improved performance of the Ice breaker (winning in record time)this same horse got beaten by conceptual, spark of gold, the conquerors of Ice breaker ran today too.but no where near. i agree with you that Horses are not machine and they do have their moods,
hope some one will enlighten me about Ice breaker improvement not the set alight performance.
is she good at 2000 mt,not at 2800 mts.
your views will help me in upgrading my knowledge
thanks tiger and all friends who cared to voice their opinions
it is great to be with you all
thanks

Hi Tiger,

Set Alight was not looking good in Paddocks parade.I was standing with one of experts of Paddock reading and he said she definetely does not look like "BEST FILLY".It looked like she wanted to get over all this soon and retire to stables.

I, until Sunday held M Narredu responsible for her Derby defeat but seeing her pathetic run in Nizams gold cup i have changed my opinion.

Will she bounce back? Her next race in all probability would be President of india gold cup in which Noble prince also will be running.Much will depend on that race,if she looses then then her career comes to end effectively and will rest all this debate.

Dear Tiger,

One comment in your article sums up the entire ethos of sports reporting
"Give credit where it's due"

Having a prejudiced analysis or biased approach will always lead to the muck and trash shockingly from the best of the names around...good to see your honest and forthright view point
